1. When is the market open?

ItemRule (October 2026)
Trading daysMonday to Friday (closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays)
Pre-open session10:30 to 10:45 AM: orders collected to find the opening price (within ±5%)
Regular session11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
After-market ordersYou can place orders at any time; they wait in the queue for the next session (price must be within 2% of the last traded price)

2. Price limits and circuit breakers

Per share: a share's price can move at most ±15% from the previous day's closing price in one day. A share stuck at +15% with only buyers is called "upper circuit"; at −15% with only sellers, "lower circuit".

Whole market (NEPSE index):

Index moveWhat happens
±5%Trading pauses for 15 minutes, only if it happens in the first two hours
±8%Trading stops for the rest of the day

3. How to buy and sell in TMS

  1. Log in to your broker's TMS and load collateral (money) if needed.
  2. Open the Buy or Sell window, type the company symbol (e.g. NABIL), the quantity (kitta) and your price.
  3. A limit order only trades at your price or better. Check the market depth to see what buyers and sellers are asking.
  4. Submit. In Order Book you can see if it is open, partly filled or complete.
  5. After selling: in MeroShare, approve the transfer of your sold shares using EDIS on the same day, so settlement is not delayed (and you avoid a penalty).

4. Settlement (T+2)

NEPSE uses T+2 settlement: the trade happens on day T, and the shares and money are settled two working days later. Bought shares appear in your Demat after settlement; money from a sale comes to your broker account and then to your bank as per your broker's process.

Example: you buy on Monday (T). Settlement is on Wednesday (T+2). The shares then show in your MeroShare portfolio.

5. Fees and taxes

Broker commission (set by SEBON, the same at every broker), charged on both buying and selling:

Trade amount (Rs.)Commission
Up to 2,500Rs. 10 flat
2,501 to 50,0000.36%
50,001 to 5,00,0000.33%
5,00,001 to 20,00,0000.31%
20,00,001 to 1,00,00,0000.27%
Above 1,00,00,0000.24%
  • SEBON fee: 0.015% of the trade amount
  • DP charge: Rs. 25 per company, per transfer day (when buying and when selling)
  • Capital gains tax (on profit only, when you sell): 10% if held 1 year or less, 7.5% if held more than 1 year (Budget 2083/84)

6. Cost and profit calculator

Enter a buy and sell to see all costs and your profit after tax. This is an estimate for learning; your broker's bill is final.

Rules and rates checked October 2026. They change from time to time; confirm with your broker, your DP or SEBON before acting.
